11 Road Trips Essentials in my Car

Traveling broadens the mind. And we love traveling. When we travel, I like to do road trips. Reason being we can see more during the drive. We could also discover hidden gems. Once when we were in Kedah, we found the Science Centre, at the back of the Paddy Museum. It was not listed even in the Trip Advisor Website. All through our travels, I have added Road Trip Essentials to my car. To make the trip more comfortable and enjoyable.

Now that I have time as we can’t travel. I have listed some Road trip Essentials. That is in my car during our road trips.

Foldable Cups.

I have five collapsible cups, one for each member of my family. The cups is not only useful for beverages. I use it when my kids have ice creams in the car. So they don’t drip any ice cream in the car. As the cups are collapsible, thus it doesn’t take much space.

Sleeping bags.

I first bought two of these sleeping bags as extra blankets for when we stayed at hotels. Cause few small hotels supply extra blankets. And also some air-conditioned was quite hard to control. But we found it useful on cold rainy days on our road trips

Round Led Torch Lights.

Every car should have one for emergencies. I have 3, one for each kid. I bought the one that had a hook and could also be a power bank. You could hook up to a selfie stick as a table lamp. Useful when dining in a dimly lit area.

Curtains.

Malaysia is sunny throughout out the year. You need to have some sort of black out curtains in your car. I have three types for different areas of my car for different reasons. I have a half window curtain at the rear. Cause the curtains I got could only cover 3/4. To cover the rest I use metal binders and a large handkerchief. That I learned from Pinterest. Click on my YouTube video 11 Road Trip Essentials that is in My Car. if you would like to see how to do it. The third curtain was something I got from a Daisho store. A curtain with suction cups that I could remove whenever we didn’t need it. This was for the front passenger.

Car Tables.

I have a PVC car table with compartments for water, tissue and a mini dustbin in my second row. And two plastics one at the back row. These tables are useful for snacks and even some activities for the kids. Example playing with their Lego blocks and coloring.

Cushions.

I let each kid choose their own cushion. So they are comfortable. So we don’t a specific theme in my car. I have also two small cushions that can be fixed to the seat belts. A place to rest your head.

First Aid Kit

Another important thing every car should have is a First Aid Kit. What I got is a simple one that fits into my dashboard. You can get these at any pharmacy. Before your trip ensure that there are no expired medicines. Also my wife like to bring a set of their medication. The normal ones will be for their cough, flu and fever.

Power Storage.

I like to also stock up on lots of power banks as each kid have their own gadget. I like to make sure my mobile is constantly powered up in case there is an emergency. Lately I have purchased two solar panels to charge my devices. One came with a large power bank

Tissue.

We need lots of tissue. With 3 kids you need lots of tissues in the car.

Toys and Activities.

We have a rule in the car. When the car is moving, no mobile devices. So on long trips, each kid brings a toy and coloring book. To do in the car. With the girl, she likes to bring her soft toys. I joined 2 S hooks to a motorbike net. And we have a small hammock to put her soft toys. You can view how it looks like in my YouTube video

Mobile phone Mount.

Lastly and just as important. A good mobile phone mount. As we normally visit destination that we have been before I use a lot of Waze and Google Maps. You need to keep your eyes on the road as well as know where you will be heading. I avoid those mobile phone mounts that are above the dashboard or fixed to your windscreen. That normally will distract my driving. Its very dangerous. So I have one that can be mounted to my air-conditioned.

Well here’s my 11 Road trip Essentials that is in my car. Hope it’s been helpful. Do visit my other post to see my beautiful Malaysia. You want to find Fun Activities to do in Malaysia. Visit my post.

Alor Setar Attractions, Kedah. Educational Road Trip

Alor Setar TowerA Visit to the Rice Bowl of Malaysia

This school holiday, our educational road trip was to Kedah. The state of Kedah is known as the rice bowl of Malaysia. Its where the main supply of rice in Malaysia comes from. I wanted to show my sons the paddy fields and how paddy is cultivated. Most off the journey after you cross the Kedah border, you will see fields of paddy. It absolutely was so beautiful and peaceful. Being a city boy, I’ve always cherished scenes such as this. Some areas were being replanted and some were being harvested.

Places of Interest Around Alor Setar

Alor Setar Tower

One of the must visit place in Alor Setar is the Alor Setar Tower. The tower is over 500 feet above sea level and gives you a 360° view of the Alor Setar Town. It is really breezy up there. We even bought their tower shaped Mineral Water bottles for souvenirs. The view of the padi fields and Gunung Jerai Mountain was awesome. The read my review on the Alor Setar Tower please click here. Alor Setar Tower – “Alor Setar Landmark”

Rumah Kelahiran Mahathir Mohammed

Another place that I was anticipating to visit was the house that our legendary two time Prime Minister grew up. The house of Doctor Mahathir Mohammed. But alas it was closed for renovation work. Maybe next time.

Muzium Padi KedahMuzium Padi Kedah – Paddy Museum, Kedah

Being the rice bowl of Malaysia, Kedah has of course a Paddy Museum. Displaying all things related to paddy from planting to production. Right up to the different products derived from rice. When you visit the museum be sure to go up to the second floor first. What beckons you is a 360 degrees auto rotating floor with a 3D mural of the surounding landscape. You will have a view of beautiful paddy fields and the famous Gunung Keriang. This 360 degrees paranomic view mural is the going ons surrounding the Paddy Museum. National Science Centre North Regional Branch- Kedah, MalaysiaNational Science Centre North Regional Branch- Kedah, Malaysia

Discovered this place from a Sightseeing Brochure at the Holiday Villa Alor Setar.Another hidden gem in Malaysia. Its not even listed on Tripadvisor’s “Things to do in Kedah”. It is a science centre similar to the Petrosains in Kuala Lumpur only smaller. Its located just next to the Paddy Museum. This kind of place is a great learning experience for kids. Here there is a lot of interactive displays where kids can participate. Click here for my review on National Science Centre North Regional Branch- Kedah, Malaysia

Where to stay in Alor Setar, Kedah

There are alot of accommodation in Alor Setar but I guess most of them are four star and below. There’s the Grand Alora, Royale Signature, Starcity, Holiday Villa and more. We stayed at the Holiday Villa which was in the oldtown of Kedah. The reason we chose Holiday Villa cause the Holiday Villa Subang and Cherating was well maintained. There was nothing much to write about the hotel. The hotel room was clean and sufficient. The deco and furniture was rather dated and old. Check in and out was fast. You will find a mall next door but what I discovered only sell handphones. There is also a McDonalds in the Mall. That’s where we had our breakfast on our first morning in Kedah. For the second day, we had breakfast at Pekan Rabu. In case you are in Alor Setar come here for breakfast, there’s something for everyone. From the local dishes to even egg and sausages. Taste was also nice. Pekan Rabu food court was really busy, so you had to pay immediately when your food or drinks turn up.

Verdict on Holiday Villa Alor Setar.

Rooms were clean and adequate. Its not five star but you cannot expect much for RM150 nett. Check in and out was really quick without much hassle. For food you need to drive out. My advice is avoid eating in the hotel coffee house. Food was rather badly cooked. So after the first day, we opt to eat out. Met some locals they recommended staying at Alora Hotel. According to them its in a modern area with food stuff just walking distance from the hotel.

Family Travel – Road Trip with a Two Year Old

How to Survive travelling with a Two Year Old

Kids TandemTravelling with a 2 year old kid can be nerve wreaking. For you and also the kid. Therefore you need to plan ahead to enjoy your holiday and not be exhausted when its all over. Having two lively and energetic boys, planning for a road trip how short it may be for me starts one week before the trip. Here are some of my tips from past experiences on how I survived traveling with my kids. I am sure you have some too, just share them in the comments below.

1. Plan your travel time.

I normally travel after lunch about 1.00pm. Reason being that this is normally the time my little one takes a nap. So this gives me about two hours of fuss free travel time.

2. Bring a portable DVD player.

Before the trip I will purchase some of his favourite cartoon or nursery rhyme DVDs to bring along. I avoid full length cartoons as my two year old gets bored very fast. That is why lively nursery rhymes works well with him. Ensure you fully charge your DVD batteries before you start your trip. And if you are going for a long trip, purchase a Cigarette Lighter Adapter that can be plugged into your Cigarette Lighter receptacle to plug your device to. So as your player is constantly charged. Also don’t forget to charge up your hand phones or tablets as a spare.

3. Have little snacks on standby

Pack little snacks for him to munch cause a hungry kid gets irritated fast. Pack something dry, as you don’t want to leave a mess in the car or on him. I normally pack biscuits, some sliced fruits or even his favourite teddy bear biscuits. Avoid sugary snack, otherwise you will have a hyper active kid bouncing around in the car. As for beverages, I normally have plain water in a bottle with a spout cause I don’t want to have water spilling on him when the car brakes. There a lot of great snack ideas here Travel Snacks Kids on Pinterest

4. Pack his favourite toy.

Bring along some of his favourite toys for them to play in the car. Buy a cute little backpack for them to put their toys in, that they can proudly carry around. Pack some light toys in it. A word of advise avoid balls, as you don’t want see balls flying around the car. It’s a very dangerous distraction when you’re driving. I have found some interesting games and toys for travelling here. DISforum- Road Trip Help Please

 5. Make sure you have a shade from the sun

I used to purchase different Sun Shades that had a suction cups but my little one kept pulling them out. What followed was the Sun Screen got damaged fast or suction cups went missing. I later found at our local DIY Store, curtains that can easily be fitted on your car windows. Its great for keeping the sun out of my kids face. Therefore if your local authorities allows, fix up a curtain in your car especially if you plan to travel in the afternoons.

6. Have another carry on.

When I travel with my little one, I normally have another bag that I keep in the car next to me or my wife. In it I put the essentials that I will need like extra diapers, extra clothes, towel, his travel soap, a formula (all pre measured in a milk compartment), a flask of hot water, drinking water, 2 or 3 milk bottles and so on. All the essentials that I might need will be at arms length. Don’t forget tissue and wet wipes. They’re useful for washing hands, cleaning toilet seats, and wiping down restaurant tables.
