Putrajaya, Malaysia

Putrajaya, Administration Capital of Malaysia

Putrajaya is the new administration capital of Malaysia replacing Kuala Lumpur which is 25km south. However Kuala Lumpur is still the financial and commercial capital of Malaysia. Putrajaya is a planned city with emphasises the preservation of its eco-system. Therefore about 70% of Putrajaya is still nature with lush greenery, botanical gardens and enhanced by large bodies of water and wetlands. So its rather different from Kuala Lumpur which is a concrete jungle and quite crowded.

What To See in Putrajaya

A lot of planning have gone into the development of Putrajaya to make it a modern city with the latest technology and infrastructure. The streets are designed with well-paved roads while the government buildings are a blend of modern architecture with Islamic elements. Commercial, governmental agencies and residential areas have been divided into precincts. There is even a waterway that cuts through the city, flowing into a large lake. So naturally places of interest are modern in design. Below are some of these places.

Perdana Putra
Located in Precinct 1, it houses the offices of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Ministers and their Deputies. Perdana Putra overlooks the Putrajaya Lake. It’s a distinctive labdmark in Putrajaya with its green pitched roof and onion-shaped main dome, surrounded by four smaller domes. There is no entrance fee but you need to leave your I’D or Passport for non Malaysian at the entrance.

Putrajaya International Convention Center Putrajaya International Convention Centre or as its locally known PICC is on top of Taman Puncak Selatan in Precinct 5. The building is shaped like a Tradisional Malay royal belt buckle. Its equipped with modern facilities, therefore its able to host international and regional conventions, exhibitions and private functions. Seri Perdana Seri Perdana is the official residence of the Prime Minister of Malaysia. As Malaysian love to hold open houses to welcome people, it is also used for welcoming heads of state, heads of government, state dignitaries and the also the public. The first resident of this house was Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s fourth Prime Minister. Multi-lingual, translated guided Tours are provided daily. For more info, just visit its website. Seri Perdana, Putrajaya Landmark (Mercu Tanda) The Putrajaya Landmark or Mercu Tanda is the first landmark in Putrajaya. It symbolises the beginnings of Putrajaya with its time capsule structure. Its design is a combination of a modern with contemporary and traditional motifs. Plaza Mercu or Landmark Plaza, is landscaped with trees and water fountains. Millennium Monument Located in Precinct 2, it is the first national monument to be built in Putrajaya. Pillar towers above the monument takes the shape of a hibiscus. It contains a wealth of information on the country’s history as well as its achievements. Putra Mosque I feel that other than the mosque in Kuala Kangsar, this is one of the most beautiful mosque in Malaysia. It has a unique pink dome which is constructed from rose-tinted granite and comprises of a prayer hall, the courtyard, learning facilities and function rooms. The mosque accommodates 15,000 worshippers and boasts a 116-metre, five-tiered minaret, the tallest in the region. Situated next to a lake, it incorporates Islamic architecture from countries such as Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Morocco. Free entry, open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM. Non-Muslims may not enter the mosque building itself during prayer hours. Proper attire is advised as this is a place of worship.

A Peaceful Resort by the Lake – Pullman Putrajaya

Hotel Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside

This is my second time checking in Pullman Lakeside Resort. The last time was for our company team building some two years ago. I booked Pullman again because I thought it is located on the lake overlooking the Millennium Monument where the 6th Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon was being held. But what I failed to notice was that the lake was large, long and the Monument was on the other side of the lake. The very far end. The hotel is really quite hard to locate as with most places in Putrajaya. Just look for the Putrajaya International Convention Centre. As for me I used my trusty WAZE.

But it’s OK. The hotel is really peaceful for those that want to relax. For those that are in need of activities or nightlife avoid this place.
We arrive quite late so we just lazed around. We had the room on the Jasmine Wing which had an Indian Theme. The room was decorated to suit the theme. There is a large bench by the window side. As we were too lazy to drive out, we had dinner in their all day dining restaurant which was reasonably priced and fast.

As the bed was comfortable and zircon was great we woke up late the next day that we missed the morning flight session of the Hot Air Balloon. We later had brunch there.

Even the daily newspaper came in a cloth bag.

A Restaurant on the lake

The Pullman Lakeside is a quiet and peaceful hotel. It’s a great place for Rest and Relaxation. The services there were also very good especially from the Front Desk who went out of their way to help. They even left the counter to open doors and help with baggage. Housekeeping services was good too. I ordered a baby cot and got it a few minutes later with a follow-up call to inquire whether we got our baby cot.

In Pictures – The 6th Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

The details on the balloon is great
The details on the balloon is great

As I have mentioned previously, I intend to go for the 6th Putrajaya International Hot Air Fiesta. I took some days off and we went to Putrajaya on a Thursday. I had tried to book the 28th of March which was a Friday so we could stay and watch the Night Glow but the hotel was already fully booked for Saturday. I supposed it was also due to the Formula 1 in Sepang on the same day. But its ok, there’s always next year.

We arrived at Pullman Lakeside Resort quite late in the evening and everyone was tired. So we just lazed around and had dinner at their all day dining restaurant. Next day everyone woke up late as the bed was comfortable and aircon was great. Therefore we only reached Precint 2 at 11.00am. We missed the morning flight session. Thanks to the Waze App on my phone we found the way quite easily. Putrajaya can be really confusing with all its different Presints.

As we missed the morning session, we had our brunch first. There were many stalls set up with a large covered dining area. Even fast food like KFC, Pizza Hut had mobile kitchens there. So food was not a problem. After lunch we went around, my little one played some games. We lazed on a field overlooking the Putrajaya lake. They even setup some beanbags there. It was really nice to relax under a shady tree with cool breeze blowing. As we had some time on our hands, we took the Putrajaya Lake Cruise. It look like it was going to rain, therefore we ran to to our car. It rained really hard. But it was a really God Send as it cool the place down.

At 6.00pm the moment we were waiting for began. My two little ones got so exited. You should have heard them shouting.

After this the Air Boss didn’t allow any balloon to fly cause the wind was strong. So they just inflated the balloons to let people view.

Although we didn’t get to see all the balloons fly, it was truly a unique experience. My other half said we will be back for either the Putrajaya Flora Fest or the fireworks.

As I am residing in Port Dickson which so much closer to Putrajaya, I plan to bring my little ones for The 6th Putrajaya International Balloon Fiesta 2014 in Putrajaya Malaysia. It will be held for four days from the 27th – 30th March 2014 during the first term school holidays. From the main website it is stated there will be more than 20 hot air balloons from all over the world, including at least five special shaped hot air balloons. It is said there is going to be a Darth Vader balloon. The time when they will float the balloons will be in the mornings and in the evenings, so it’s going to be a unique experience for my two heroes. Admission is free.
From their website it also states that there will also be the Mountain Dew Extreme Zone which will boasts an array of outdoor fun activities including water zorbing and rock climbing for the adventurous. Lots of food and beverage outlets. For the kids there will be a Kids’ Play Area that will offer a variety of amusement rides, coloring contests, arts & crafts and many more.

At night there will be an explosive ‘Night Glow’ event, where hot air balloons and strobe lights are lit up in sync to the sounds of popular music followed by fireworks display. That is one of the reason that I chose to stay at Pullman Putrajaya as the resort is located just across the lake with a great view of the Hot Air Balloon area. So we don’t need to travel out, we just need sit by the lake and enjoy the view.

Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside

Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside, Putrajaya, Malaysia

The Pullman Putrajaya is located next to the scenic Putrajaya Lake. The hotel is near to the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, therefore it’s a favourite with people who are attending a function in the Convention Centre. The architecture of this hotel is really amazing. It consists of four wings that is designed with its own theme to it. There’s the Chinese, Malay, Indian and the Borneo theme called the Rafflesia. The rooms are also designed to follow the theme of the building. We had the Borneo styled room, with the balcony facing the lake. Being Borneo style the rooms was naturally mainly wood with a flat screen tv, in room safe, rainfall shower but no bathtub.

There are a lot of activities you and your family can idulge in. There is bicycle for rent, canoe, water ski, Kids Play Room, a games room that has Wii and pool table. There is also a pool which I felt was rather small and a GYM next to the pool. But I would suggest a morning jog by the lake, cause its really great. There is also a Spa.

At the Pullman there’s two food outlets. One is their all day dining restaurant called the B and one more is The Village. The Village is located on the lake with tatche roof and at night the ambience is great. But I didn’t dine as I came here for a seminar and our meals was pre arranged.

As with most places in Putrajaya, this hotel is quite hard to located. There are not many signboard directing you. So the landmark to look is the PICC or Putrajaya International Convention Centre. Pullman Putrajaya is a nice getaway if you are not after the nightlife as its really quiet at night. I would recommend this place if you want some peace and quiet or you can also use it as a transit point before your next destination as its really close to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Another tip is to bring a good camera cause the view of the lighted Putrajaya Bridge is awesome.

Apart from the Lake and the Bridge, there’s a lot of interesting places to see in Putrajaya.
